Growing Support for Tesla’s Electric Vehicle Charging Plug as It Becomes the US Standard
Several players in the electric-vehicle power industry have pledged to provide compatible equipment for Tesla Inc.’s charging technology, strengthening the automaker’s system as the standard in the United States.
ChargePoint Holdings Inc., Blink Charging Co. and Wallbox NV each announced on Monday that they have chargers capable of working with Tesla’s North American Charging Standard, which is rapidly gaining ground in the competition with the so-called connected charging system. Australia’s Tritium DCFC Ltd. also said they offer a NACS connector option with chargers.
The quick succession announcement comes just days after auto giants General Motors Co. and Ford Motor Co. agreed to join forces with Elon Musk’s company to implement standardized NACS ports in future models.
These latest payments companies’ moves highlight how quickly the industry is moving toward a single standard, at least in North America. This could give consumers considering an electric car more confidence that the technology is here to stay and that they can find places to charge their batteries. It could also act as a setback for the charging industry to prevent Tesla from capturing a larger portion of the fast-growing business.
“At the end of the day, debit companies offer an opportunity to stay relevant and not lose market share,” said BloombergNEF analyst Ryan Fisher. “Other automakers may not want to encourage Tesla any further, so they’re in the boardroom right now deciding what to do.”
According to a recent report by Piper Sandler & Co., Tesla could increase revenue by $3 billion in 2030 and more than $5.4 billion in 2032 from non-Tesla vehicle owners.
Charger maker ChargePoint said its NACS charging adapter was in development before Ford and GM adopted it for their future electric cars, but the company said Monday it will soon offer a compatible charger for its current lineup. Wallbox also announced that it will start offering NACS-compliant chargers for its Supernova fast chargers.
Charging station operator Blink announced that it will start making its fast chargers available in the global market and they are equipped for both CCS and NACS use.
